Slow Medium is a woven textile series by Craftwork, created during the Digital Weaving Residency at Praxis Fiber Workshop and exhibited at THE BLANC.
The series continues Craftwork's ongoing investigation into translating algorithms into textile form, using custom generative software to simulate the growth patterns of lichen, one of earth's oldest and slowest-growing organisms, and encoding that simulated growth directly into variations in thread density across the woven structure. The result is a dimensional topography that builds and spreads across the cloth, echoing the same organic logic as its biological source. Lichen has been used as a dye source for centuries, and for a practice constantly investigating the dialogue between ancient and future technologies, it represents a compelling material: older than almost everything, and yet endlessly generative.
